For years, we’ve been saying that great advertising is a balance between great strategy and great production. Find the right audience, show them the right ad, and results follow. Now, platforms like Meta and Google have become increasingly sophisticated at audience optimization, and AI platforms churn out fast, cheap visuals.
So what’s left? Are people buying something from every ad they see? Obviously not. In order to compete and make sure that you’re getting a return on your advertising investments, you need to stand out. In a world where anyone can quickly put together something, let’s talk about how to make sure your business is putting out something great.
Manual campaign targeting is a highly specialized skill. It requires data, time, and specific industry knowledge. These are not things that every marketing team has access to. For some, automated ad buying has been “good enough”, and depending on the campaign (and your luck) it may even be outperforming tried-and-true methods.
But not every company has the means to dive neck-deep in data to optimize their ad spend in this way. Ads management is something we offer, and we recommend it, but the best marketing is about using your budget on the right pieces that will benefit your company in the long run.
Let’s start with making sure your message, and the creative that goes with it, is checking all the boxes.
You can’t compromise on the quality of the creative in your advertising. When you’re selling professional services, quality products, and your best work, you can’t expect a blurry photo, cheap video, or same-sy AI -generated content to communicate that value to your audience.
A great ad concept, a compelling visual, and a headline that resonates are the elements that tell your story. And they still require human intelligence, creative skill, and audience understanding. Because they’re the hardest thing to replicate (artificial intelligence has its place), creativity continues to be a primary competitive advantage in paid advertising.
For video ads, you have 1.5 seconds to stop someone from scrolling. For static ads, you have a fraction of a second for your visual to register. The hook is your entire first impression, and it determines whether your ad’s actual message (and call-to-action) is seen or skipped. The best hooks either challenge an assumption, trigger a strong emotion, or speak directly to a recognized pain point.
Try “you’ve been doing [x] wrong” or “this is why you keep seeing [x] when you want to [y]”. Identify the problem, and position yourself as the solution, and fit that all into under a second. Easy, right?
Features are what you sell. Benefits are why someone buys. High-performing creative leads with a crystal-clear benefit statement, not product specifications. The benefit “get more leads” outperforms the feature “our platform integrates with 12 CRMs.” Know the difference and write accordingly.
Ads that look like ads perform worse than ads that feel native to the platform. On Instagram, polished-but-natural content outperforms high-production corporate video. On LinkedIn, thought leadership visuals outperform traditional banners. Platform-appropriate creative consistently delivers better results than repurposed assets.
This doesn’t mean you have to do it all yourself, either. Our production team at Giant Shoe Creative understands how to make organic looking-and-feeling content, while still keeping it elevated and professional.
Every strong ad has one ask. Not three. Not an ‘or’ option. One clear, low-friction next step. The more choices you give someone in a CTA, the less likely they are to take any of them.
You also need to keep your CTA consistent across your channels. That means if you’re telling people to “book a free demo”, you can’t have “book a quick call”, “book an in-person meeting”, and “buy our service” spread out all over the place. Keep it consistent, and make it easy!
Strong creative builds brand equity over time, not just immediate conversions. Ads that are visually consistent with your broader brand identity reinforce recognition and trust, which compounds into better long-term performance across both paid and organic channels.
There are also different kinds of campaigns, with their own goals and considerations:
It’s key to know what your goals are in order to plan your means to the end.
Our creative advertising campaigns are built around all five of these principles. From storyboarding and scripting to motion graphics and ad production, we build creative that performs — not just creative that looks good.
Even great creative gets fatigued. The most successful advertisers in Canada run systematic creative testing rotating multiple ad concepts simultaneously, measuring performance by variation, and replacing underperformers continuously. This isn’t a launch-and-forget approach. It’s an ongoing creative investment that compounds over time.
A good benchmark is to run at least 3–5 creative variations per campaign. Let data determine which performs, and build on winners rather than guessing.
How often should I refresh my ad creative?
Your ad creative’s lifespan is dependent on your industry and messaging. Monitor your frequency metric closely: once average frequency exceeds 3-4 impressions per user, it’s time to refresh your creative or else you’re paying for people to ignore your ads.
Do I need professional video production for ads, or can I use user-generated content?
Both formats can perform extremely well, as long as you’re authentic and relevant. UGC-style content is best used for direct response on your socials. That means posting a story when you have a last-minute offer, or recording a quick “look where I am” at your next tradeshow. For anything that you want to be longer-lasting, higher-production value will deliver better results and make your brand more valuable.
Can Giant Shoe Creative produce ad creative alongside managing my campaigns?
Yes, and this is actually our preferred approach. When the same team is responsible for both the creative and the campaign strategy, everything is more cohesive and the workflow is cleaner, and faster. When we handle both, it consistently produces better results for our clients.
